Irrigation
Winterization
& Blowouts

Water left in your lines will freeze. When it does, it expands — and it doesn't care how new your system is. A professional blowout protects everything before Minnesota's first hard freeze.

Why It Matters

Water in your pipes expands when it freezes — your system doesn't

Cracked pipes, shattered heads, and blown valve bodies are all common results of an improperly winterized irrigation system. It happens in the walls of the pipe where you can't see it — and you won't know until you fire up the system in the spring to find out exactly what the winter cost you.

A proper professional blowout takes about an hour. A spring repair of freeze damage takes much longer — and costs a lot more.

"The cheapest spring repair is the one you prevented with a $90 blowout in October."

The Process

How a professional blowout works

Shut Off the Water Supply

Main irrigation shutoff and backflow preventer closed and isolated from the water source.

Step 1

Connect Commercial Compressor

We use a high-volume commercial air compressor — 50–100 CFM. Consumer rentals deliver 10–20 CFM. The difference matters.

Step 2

Zone-by-Zone Purge

Each zone opened and blown out individually, cycled multiple times until no water remains in lines or heads.

Step 3

Final Check & Controller Shutdown

Controller set to off for winter, backflow preventer drained, final walkthrough to confirm complete shutdown.

Step 4
DIY vs. Professional

Why homeowner blowouts fail — and what we see every spring because of it.

Consumer compressors can't move enough air volume
Insufficient CFM leaves water trapped in low spots
Most DIYers only do one pass per zone — not enough
Backflow winterization is frequently skipped entirely
MN freeze depth requires thorough, full-system purging
We know every zone must be confirmed dry before leaving

Absolutely — we winterize all irrigation systems regardless of brand or installer. If you have a zone map, great. If not, we find and test every zone ourselves.
